If you had done something really bad, some teachers would give you six. For some reason, they usually didn’t do this in front of the class, but made you stay behind after the lesson, or come back at lunchtime. For six-stroke whackings, you were usually made to lean over a table, and the strokes were evenly paced, about three seconds between each whack, I would guess. Because it was six strokes leaning over a desk, it was a school saying that this was good practice for the headmaster’s cane.
