We also had states that allowed the corporal punishment of girls in state schools, and those that expressly forbid it. Even in the states where it was available, less than 5% of incidents involved girls – in most schools less than 1% of incidents until the 1970s. In the 1970s when there was an effort made to reduce the use of caning with boys and to avoid sexist policies, the ratio of girls climbed slightly – but more because the cane was being used less with boys than because it was being used more with girls.
