She had some idea of what kind of reaction she’d get from her former stepmother, but she didn’t know her aunt well enough to know what to expect, and the unpredictability itself scared her. Would her aunt want to keep her, or would she try to get someone else to take her? She didn’t really want to leave Hailey; Hailey had been nice to her. Unable to make her mouth form an admission that she hoped would make her aunt forgive her sin, Erin’s eyes searched Hailey’s, begging Hailey to do just one more favor and speak for her.
Hailey couldn’t quite explain it, but somehow she understood what Erin wanted. “Erin wet herself last night,” Hailey told her mother. Erin’s face turned bright red, but she remained silent. “I helped her get cleaned up, though; her wet sheets and clothes are in the laundry.”
