It’s also, at times, an extremely difficult question to answer when it comes to Victorian independent schools (and to an extent this is true of other states). Because teachers in private schools derive their authority to administer corporal punishment by being inĀ in loco parentis to a great extent, the bottom line as to whether or not corporal punishment was used in a school was often down to individual teachers. Even if a Headmaster (or Headmistress, or Principal) chose to ban corporal punishment, or for that matter, even if a school council did, it was often down to strength of personality as to what degree that ban was enforced. I know of a number of girls schools where corporal punishment was officially not permitted – but where it did happen occasionally. Boys schools as well – but very few of those had complete bans, so it’s a less common phenomenon.
