The sending of pupils to another teacher, or to the Headmaster, to be punished did happen, but it was fairly rare. The view was that it was the responsibility of the classroom teacher to control, and if required to discipline, his class not the duty of someone else. Sending pupils to another member of staff could be seen as an inability to cope and the process used up the valuable time of someone else. When it did happen it was sometimes because that particular class teacher did not have a strap, or did not believe in using one. Sometimes a pupil was sent to the Headmaster to be belted so that an example could be made of him or because he had refused to take the belt from his classroom teacher, or he had done something truly wicked.
