various teachers set me casting my mind back to those happy 1950s days when I were a lad, and I have realised on reflection that yet another of our great characters taught geography, though he never taught me, which is why he didn’t come to mind before.

This gentleman was what is now known as an ‘early adopter’, that’s to say if there was any specialist kit to be had that might be useful as a teaching aid, he’d have it first, even if he had to buy it himself rather than wait for the school budget to stretch to it. Electronic kit being conspicuous by its absence from the catalogues in those far off days, we are mainly talking magic lanterns, slide projectors, 16mm projectors, cameras, telescopes, microscopes etc.
