I’ve noticed that Americans, particularly from the South, can be exceptionally polite. Is that due to their all carrying guns – “an armed society is a polite society”? Whenever I speak to Americans there are always a few “ma’am”s in the conversation somewhere. I think it’s a bit excessive in the military though. I remember my husband laughing so much he couldn’t speak for several minutes after a telephone call to a local USAF base. He was finally able to tell me that just about every sentence began and ended with “Sir”, with a few more “Sir”s mixed in for good measure as in “Well, Sir, I don’t know, Sir, but, Sir, I you hold the line, Sir, I’ll ask my colleague, Sir.”
