The cane was usually reserved for the head of the school I attended and she would administer the cane in her office. A teacher could give a pupil up to six strokes with a wooden ruler in class and I was subject to one such punishment. I had forgotten my lunch and my mother arrived to bring it to me, when she knocked she was pearing into the small window on the classroom door and I was bent over with my teacher giving me six whacks on my bottom as I was standing in front of the class. Mum decided I needed a repeat lesson and she spanked me as soon as I got home from school. It was not the cane but I consider this close enough.
