The above methods of treating boys and girls ensures that the difference between them is emphasised. Boys need to see that girls are gently treated so that they think of girls in a chivalrous way. After all, what man worthy of being called a gentleman would dream of walking ahead of a lady through a door or failing to offer to carry a heavy parcel for a lady. Respect for girls can so readily be taught in a co-educational school so that it is part of a man’s life later on.
When I was at school in Lancashire in the 1940s, boys were always called by their surnames while girls were given their first names and this was part of the respect given to the fair sex. We have lost much since those days!
