In eight years of primary school education, I never received and form of physical punishment. My parents owned a small grocery shop and were in a position to donate gifts and presents to the local convent. Children from working-class families, whose parents were not in a position to buy favors, were subjected to, often very severe punishment. The ruler [on the flat and on the edge] slapped with an open hand across the face, bamboo rods, hand across the back of the thigh, these were meted out on a daily basis.
Secondary boarding school [Mercy Convent, Mountmellick] was a totally different experience.
