It was a smell of contrast, something that denoted the difference between the industrial chemical treatments used by an impersonal corporation and the real women who used the facilities. I sniffed again and realized that there was something else in the air, something that tinged the air with a peculiar odor that I couldn’t place, something half-remembered with pleasant memories that seem to linger long after the original source had vanished. There were stalls as I expected and a long mirror over a counter with several sinks that I couldn’t see; from where I was sitting all I could see of the sinks were the plumbing pipes beneath. I had to infer the presence of the sinks from the plumbing.
