I was always fascinated by the reactions of boys, and in a few instances girls,when they were slippered. The one thing that always happened was the face going bright red.Very few cried, I think I only saw two boys crying, and never saw a girl cry, though I reckon I only saw about six girls slippered.
However it was the reaction of those slippered that interested me. Most would try to make no reaction, simply walking back to their desk and not rubbing their bottoms , but some would leap up and down shouting ouch. One boy who was regularly slippered developed a sliding into his seat technique, to try to ease the pain without letting on that it hurt.I was of the attempt at no reaction school, though I did rub it if I was slippered in private though only after I had left the room.
One girl I saw did the rubbing and jumping thing , but others just took it and made no reaction. Another girl who was slippered in private came out of the teacher’s room rubbing her bottom mildly and attempting to smile, though I think she had had a couple of minutes to recover.
Does any else have similar recollections?
Off topic , but on red faces, a barmaid recently slapped my bottom and she went bright red! Magic. I have yet to get my own back but I will!
As far as I recall reactions to the slipper were mainly a function of age, sex and number of strokes. Junior School (8 to 11+) was where I first encountered the slipper. It was used exclusively by the relatively few male teachers, mainly on boys, but not uncommonly on girls. It was always a public punishment, administered in front of the rest of the class, usually with the recipient bent over a desk in the front row, facing the class. This was the early 1950s and desks were rigidly arranged in rows and columns.
One or two strokes were the norm, and sometimes produced tears, especially in the earlier years. More commonly with girls, probably because in those days girls were supposed to be better behaved than boys, and there was undoubtedly more loss of face for a girl in incurring a punishment. I remember the tears, and some verbal reactions, but not the other post punishment strategies you mention. Too much time elapsed maybe!
More serious offences brought three or even four strokes, and that would nearly always result in verbal reactions and at least some tears, even in the top class, and even with boys. You say you don’t recall seeing any girls cry, and only a couple of boys. Maybe your contemporaries were tougher than us, maybe our teachers hit harder, who knows? I’m happy to say I only got the slipper once, one fairly light stroke, together with several other lads and no tears on that occasion!
I remember one particular “red face” incident in my second year at grammar school. Our latin teacher (there you are, A_L!) was a cheerful young chap who was pretty good at chalk-throwing, and also handed out detentions and, now and again, the slipper. The lad sitting next to me had committed some misdemeanour, and was called out to the front and told to bend over while the slipper was retrieved. Teacher positioned himself, and then called out the additional instruction “touch your toes” — and he then proceeded to wham home the slipper just as the boy’s hands reached their lowest point and his trousers were tightest. And when the boy stood up after the single stroke, his face was almost the colour of a beetroot.
Incidentally, it’s interesting to think back about class attitudes to such punishments. Usually, for a one or two stroke slippering, it would be “serves you right”: but for a (rare) punishment which really hurt and left the boy openly crying, sympathy would definitely be on his side.

One of them was in her late twenties and a mother of two, the other much younger. I was really turned on as it reminded me of schooldays though obviously they were not slippered !
The barmaid I mentioned has still not had a smack from me, she had a rather unappealing denim skirt on the other day, but she does wear tight jeans and even better , a pair of very tight black trousers, I will bide my time.

To be perfectly honest, my own reaction to the Slipper was a mixture of nervousness and pleasure. I found the idea that I was going to get a slippering exciting, I worried in case it hurt but mostly I had a nice time when we got down to it.
On one occasion, I was taken into an Office for missing a detention. When questioned why I didn’t turn up, I claimed that “I forgot” and the teacher said that he had not forgotten before picking up his Slipper and asking me to follow him to the corner of the room. I remember smiling because I preferred getting the Slipper to detention anyway but also thinking “this is going to hurt.” Before carrying out the slippering the teacher told me that I’d been “asking for this for a long time” and then used the Slipper to point to the small space in the corner that he’d left for me to bend over. I went and touched my toes for him and had my first whack, (it stung but wasn’t as bad as I expected) and then had a good stinger on top of that one. He was preparing a third for me but I flinched and he let me off with two… afterwards, I was annoyed with myself because it would have been nice to have had that third one.
On another occasion, I’d been given a detention with another boy but I was in more trouble than him. After half an hour of sitting on the wooden stools in the Physics lab, he told the other boy, Woods, that he could go but went and got the Slipper out for me so that he could whack me before sending me home. Although the detention had been boring, it was nice to have a bit of excitement to look forward to at the end. For this slippering, I had to bend over the desk. The first whack was quite a stinger and because I didn’t want another straight on top of it, I made a bit of a performance of shouting out ‘Ow!’ afterwards and standing up to space things out. The teacher waited patiently for me to bend down again and then delivered his second. Again,I gave an exaggerated reaction and stood up before bending over again and continued in this fashion until the teacher had given me the full five that he intended me to have. The whole slippering probably took just over a minute when it should have been possible to do it in around 15 seconds. From my point of view, it made it more manageable and allowed me to enjoy the slippering. However, I was embarrassed when I left the room to find that Woods had waited at the door and tried to look through the keyhole because he wanted to watch. I asked him if he had seen anything and he said,’No’ but he had heard everything. I don’t think he was very impressed with me and I tried to explain why I had made so much noise when we discussed the slippering afterwards. If I had known that Woods had wanted to watch/hear me being slippered, I would have tried to remain silent.
I liked getting slippered (although there were some teacher I avoided because they were very severe) and I was disappointed on some occasions when I missed out.
It was not uncommon for teachers to arrive at the lesson with a set of books and a plimsoll or other suitable ‘Slipper’to have at hand in case it was needed. I can remember my RE teacher dealing very quickly with a case of pushing at the classroom door by taking a boy to one side and giving him a quick slippering on the spot. He pulled the boy out of line, quickly bent him over and gave him three quick whacks with the plimsoll. I watched as the teacher lifted his knee up slightly as he put a bit of effort into making the slippering sting and the boy on the receiving end looked pained and said,’Ow!’ each time the ‘Slipper’ hit his bottom. My regret was that it wasn’t my bottom.
On the subject of girls crying during slipperings, a lot depended on the circumstances. Girls slippered in front of the class would be less likely to cry for the reasons suggested in Declan’s opening post and because such punishments were usually, though not always, less severe and were generally carried out more quickly unless the teacher had a liking for long pre-punishment rituals.
A slippering in front of the class could be a very brief event. Something like: “You! Why are you talking? Come here. Turn around, bend over.”
Whack! Whack!
“Right, back to your seat.”
If the teacher was one of those who liked to slipper pupils at their own desks, it could be even quicker. It would be over before they knew it, so they often wouldn’t have time for whatever part of the brain it is that causes crying to get into gear.
In schools where slipperings were regularly and routinely given out in front of the class, and even became expected by everyone, tears would be less likely than in those schools in which they were rare events. Imagine a scenario in which a girl may have only ever witnessed one or two slipperings previously over the years she had been at the school, and only ever to boys, suddenly being called out to the front and told to bend over by the teacher as he reached for his slipper. I would certainly expect such a girl to cry in those circumstances. In the school I attended as a boy, CP was rare and on the few occasions it was used, word of the incidents would spread around the school like wildfire. It would be like: “Did you hear about what happened to —– during maths?” or “—— has been sent to the headmaster for swearing again. I think he might get the cane this time.” And these rare “beatings” were never particularly severe – usually nothing more than one stroke of the cane to a boy’s hand. So a girl being slippered in a largely liberal school would probably take it far less well than one in a school where such punishments were commonplace.
If the teacher really wanted a girl to cry, he could have exploited the embarrassment factor (I prefer the word “embarrassment” to “humiliation”) which could be quite powerful when a girl was made to bend over for a slippering in front of her classmates, which may sometimes have included leering and jeering boys. Of course the kind of teachers who used CP were usually those who would never tolerate such jeering, but maybe that was because they didn’t know much about psychology.
On the other hand, a girl being slippered in front of such an unruly type of class might sometimes often be determined not to cry because to do so would be to give the jeerers something extra to jeer about, so they might just grit their teeth and put on a brave face.
Girls may have also resisted crying before, during and immediately after a slippering, but then rushed to the toilets to do their crying there. If a girl was slippered in private after a lesson and did not cry, when she finally left, if it had been possible to watch where she headed for, and how fast she did so, that would probably have indicated whether she had been suppressing the tears or not. In my opinion, if a girl was slippered in front of the class, unless it had been just a quick and not too hard punishment, the teacher should have told her that she could have ten minutes to go outside or to the toilets. After all, the punishment was supposed to be over after the slippering. Another_Lurker, what that man Ford did to Jennifer, in making her stand with her hands on her head for the remainder of the lesson after slippering her, was bordering on sadism. It makes me angry to think about it.
It wasn’t only the pain of a slippering that could determine whether a girl would cry or not. The atmosphere could be an even greater determining factor. If the right atmosphere was there, girls would sometimes start crying before the first whack was delivered. The preparation and the positioning of the girl and the prolonging of that process could make tears more likely. A_L, that girl, Jennifer, who was slippered at your school during a PT lesson, was a very brave girl indeed. She didn’t start crying until the slippering actually began, but the ordeal that man put her through while preparing her would, I am sure, have reduced most girls, and even many boys, of that age to tears. I am guessing that she had never been slippered before and so was not quite sure what was going to happen or how painful her slippering was going to be. If the same thing had happened to her again, let’s say the following week, I would expect that the tears would have started flowing during that bizarre preparation at the latest, and maybe even earlier, at the point when he told her that she was to get the same as last week.
But not all girls were the same. Some girls would burst into tears if a teacher shouted at them, whereas others could take a severe six whack walloping without crying. The “goody goody” type girls who were usually only accustomed to teachers being nice to them, could go into a state of shock if one were to suddenly give them just a mild telling off.
With regard to your comments on my posting, it was a long time ago, 55 years ago in fact in another couple of months. Régimes in schools as regards corporal punishment and almost everything else were very different then, as was the society in which schools operated. Even so it was an exceptional punishment, which is why it made such an impression on me. I’d seen plenty of other girls punished in various ways but that was different. As I noted in the post the girl concerned, now a retired lady, doesn’t seem to have suffered any ill effects and doesn’t refer to it in her FR entry. As also noted in the post, the names I used are not those of the actual participants.
I hope I will be forgiven for slightly veering away from the original meaning of this thread title, which was how those being slippered reacted, by looking at how those witnessing such slipperings may have reacted. And, predictably, you might say, I want to concentrate on how boys may have been affected by witnessing their girl classmates being slippered.
I don’t think anyone here would disagree with the assertion that an adolescent boy witnessing a girl in his class being called out to the front and made to bend over for a severe slippering or caning, could be turned on sexually and permanently affected in that way by his experience. But what about the other ways in which girls were slippered or caned in mixed schools? I refer to the private or what I call semi-private punishments of girls. Far less has been discussed in CP literature and on the internet about what effect the mere knowledge of such punishments may have had on boys. But I believe that these private or semi-private punishments of girls may, in some cases, have had an even more powerful effect on boys than those given in front of the class, firstly because they were generally more severe, and expected to be by both their recipients and others aware of them, and secondly because they challenged boys to use their imaginations and therefore think more deeply about them.
As I mentioned in my previous post in this thread, many of the slipperings given in full view of the class were very quick and comparitively minor in severity. Just one whack of the slipper was common for such open punishments. A teacher may have been addressing the class when he suddenly noticed a girl inattentively gazing out of the window. He would rush over to her and it might be something like:
“Christine, you are not paying attention again. Stand up. Rest your hands on your desk.”
“Whack!”
“Sit down! Now, as I was saying, in the summer of 1644, as Cromwell was preparing his Roundheads for the battle of Marston Moor…..”
I can’t imagine many boys being turned on by that.
But what if this Christine had been told: “You will stay behind after the bell and then we will see if you pay more attention when my slipper is walloping your bottom than you pay when I am taking a lesson.”
That would be far more likely to arouse the boys. “Wow!” they would think. “I wonder how many she is going to get.” They would gaze across at the girl, studying her facial expressions. “I wonder what she is thinking. I’ll bet she is terrified,” they would think to themselves.
Or imagine a boy walking past the study of his headmaster who regularly canes boys on their bottoms. Suddenly he sees a girl emerge from the head’s study in tears and rubbing or clutching her bottom. The fact that he hadn’t seen exactly what had happened in there moments earlier wouldn’t stop him from feeling excited. “I wonder if she had to bend over the way we have to,” he would think. “Did he cane her as hard as he caned me last week? How many strokes did she get? Did he pull her skirt up? How loud did she scream? I wish I had been here a bit earlier; I could have listened through the door.”
And that last part about listening through the door brings me to what I call semi-private punishments. These are the punishments for which a teacher would take a girl to a small room – such as a storage area – within the main classroom, hidden from view but not out of earshot. Or he might take her outside the classroom and then shut the door before slippering her, under the absurd pretence of giving her some privacy during the painful and traumatic ordeal he was putting her through.
let’s look at a few Friends Reuinited references to these semi-private punishments. This first one was from a girl who attended the Arthur Mellows Village College in Peterborough:
“He used to come into the Music Room and open the windows, shouting ‘stinking peasants’. Remember the big cupboard where he took the ‘victim’ to whack them?”
Presumably this “big cupboard” was located within the classroom. How much privacy would that really give a girl being whacked in there as her classmates listened to the sounds of her beating and her yells of pain?
We know that this particular male teacher almost certainly did beat girls on their bottoms because another girl from that same school and same year wrote about him:
“Does anyone remember getting that knotched blank accross their bum?”
A boy from the same year also gives an account of this particular teacher in a direct reply to the above post:
‘Mandy, in 1972, that “board” was part of the crate that a new Kettle drum was delivered in. Having placed it aside for future disciplinary action, one of my class mates (Tiller) foolishly stated the obvious “I bet that would hurt sir!” Well Stowell-Smith being the man he was, christened the plank on Tiller’s bum, Forever being called the “Tiller Stick” ‘
The picture is not totally complete but from the above three accounts it looks likely that there were occasions when this male teacher took girl pupils into a cupboard within the classromm and beat their bottoms with a board as their male classmates listened from outside the cupboard. It sounds like something from a Benny Hill sketch, doesn’t it?
But this account from Friends Reunited is much clearer. It is from a girl who attended the Edgware School from 1970 to 1976:
“Only once, when my teacher spotted me throwing a paper aeroplane back at a boy who had just hit me with it. He got away with it, whilst I was taken out into the corridor and slippered.”
That brief account does not reveal how many whacks the girl received and it doesn’t tell us whether the teacher was male or female. What we do know is that the Edgware School was a mixed school, and that tells us that boys were almost certainly (unless it was needlework or cookery) present. It is interesting that the girl reveals that this was her only slippering throughout her six years at the school, as that may indicate that beatings of girls were fairly rare events. Rare events attract more attention and interest than frequent and commonplace ones.
So let’s consider what those boys will have seen and heard. It is possible that after the teacher and the girl left the room, some of the pupils may have tried to peek through the windows to see the girl being slippered in that corridor. But let’s discount that and consider only the very minimum they will have seen and heard.
They will have heard the teacher shout at the girl to “stand up and come here”. Then they will have seen the teacher take out his/her slipper. At that point the atmosphere would have been one of tension and suspense. Boys would have been looking at the girl and noticing the fear on her face as she walked to the front of the class and as she looked at the slipper in the teacher’s hand.
Now let’s look at the words the girl used to describe what came next. She said: “I was taken out into the corridor ..” The interesting word there is “taken”. That may suggest that the teacher took hold of her in some way and forcefully marched her to the door. If so, that would have added to the excitement in the air.
And notice that she said “into the corridor” and not “to the end of the corridor”. That is very significant because it suggests that she was merely taken just outside the door, so that every part of her punishment would be within earshot of the pupils inside the classroom.
So what would her male classmates have then heard? There may have been a short continuation of her telling off, followed by the command to “bend over” at which point one of the boys sitting near the door may have said something like: “Yes, I think he/she is going to do it. He’s/she’s just told her to bend over!” A deathly silence would then ensue as the excited pupils listened even more intently. The tension in the air as they listened and waited would be gripping.
Then they would have heard the first whack, possibly followed by the girl yelling from the pain. At that point both boys and girls would sit there with mouths agape (girls tended to put their hands over their mouths at such moments) as they listened in shock to their classmate’s suffering.
We don’t know how many whacks the girl received, so let’s assume that there had been only one more. Let’s also assume that, seconds later as she and the teacher returned to the room, she had been determined not to show how much pain her slippering had caused her, and so didn’t hold or rub her bottom. She may have been able to bravely resist that but she would not have been able to hide her distress as she would return to the lesson red faced and dishevelled. She may not have been openly sobbing but her eyes would probably be watery. Those few seconds between the final whack and having to return to the class would not have been enough for her to compose herself after the ordeal she had just been through. Remember, as she revealed, she had never been slippered before and so had been totally unprepared for such a painful and distressing experience. A girl’s first slippering can be a particularly horrendous experience for her.
The teacher will have then told her: “Right, now go back to your place.” As she walked to her seat, every eye in the class would have been on her and she would have been fully conscious of that, and her red face would have become even redder. As she sat down, whether she had winced from the pain or been brave enough to suppress that wince, her anxiety will have been raised further still, and would have been noticeable.
The teacher would then have told the class to look to the front and pay attention, but throughout the remainder of that lesson, the other pupils would have made further quick glances at the girl whenever the teacher’s back was turned.
The boys in that class didn’t need to see that slipper landing on that girl’s bottom to become sexually aroused by what they had seen & heard that day. Later, when running through those events in their minds, they would have had no difficulty in using their imaginations to create that one missing piece from the jigsaw, and that would help to prolong their thoughts and thus make them more indelible.
When my Dad fetched his ‘slipper’ for me, (a traditional bedroom slipper with a smooth sole), my reaction was usually, “No Dad! Please Dad! Sorry Dad!” as he took me over to his armchair to bend me over his knee and give me a good slippering. I used to struggle to try to avoid being put over his knee and put the palm of my hand in front of my bottom and hope that he wouldn’t pull my pants down because it hurt more on the bare bottom. I would try to be brave but he always slippered my bottom very hard and first of all I would shout and plead for him to stop and then cry. He always gave mea few whacks when I was crying to make sure.
I had “The Slipper” a few times at school and found that I liked it!
The first time that I was slippered was with my Geography teacher’s bendy white size eleven plimsoll. Naturally, I felt quite nervous at first as I bent over and touched my toes and waited for him to slipper me as I did not know how much pain to expect. However, the waiting was the worst part because when the actual slipper smacked across my bottom I found that it was a nice experience. First of all, I heard the sound of “The Slipper” whacking across my buttocks then within a split second my bottom began to tingle and get hot and then the pain began to subside into a lovely warm glow which lasted for about ten minutes.
I made sure that I had a few more slipperings after that!
The slipper was the most common punishment at my school, and not that common and done in private so often we did not even know a boy had been punished. I can recall two occasions where I knew a boy had been slippered. Both times the boy was a bit redfaced and possibly had been crying.
On the other hand an older boy (11 ish) who was brought back into the classroom after being caned and did not show any signs of being punished, no red face, no sitting uncomfortably.
Another boy who was a friend of mine was one of the more regular recipients of the slipper and cane and he said that he thought the headmaster (an older large man) was not particularly effective with the cane! Perhaps that was bravado on his part, I did not try and find out for myself.
‘The Slipper’, (most commonly an old white plimsoll with the laces removed – but sometimes a trainer, baseball shoe or leather sandal), was commonly used in class when I was at school; although slipperings were also administered in private.
I experienced both public and private slipperings myself, but preferred being taken into a private room to be given ‘The Slipper’ or being asked to wait behind at the end of the lesson to be slippered as I didn’t have to put on a brave face and I could say ‘Ow!’ w

On two occasions, I was slippered privately with another boy present who was also seeing the teacher for a slippering and it was therefore necessary to pretend that I wasn’t worried about bending over for ‘The Slipper’ and to try not to show any signs that it hurt. I was also slippered on my own on four occasions and didn’t feel embarrassed in private about letting the teacher see that ‘The Slipper’ hurt; particularly on the occasion when I had to bend over a desk and be given five whacks which gave me a red hot stinging bottom. I was slippered in class twice and once jumped up in pain when given an eye-wateringly painful whack with a plimsoll, (I would have cried if the teacher made me have another), and on the second occasion I held my breath as the teacher held me down by the scruff of the neck and gave me four very hard whacks with a thick-soled trainer right across the middle of both buttocks. On both occasions, other boys seemed to enjoy watching me getting slippered.
When I forgot to do my homework, I felt really embarrassed when my teacher took “the slipper” out of his drawer and told me that I would have to wait behind with him at the end of the lesson so that he could give me “the slipper”.
I tried to hide my fear but I kept looking at the plimsoll on his desk and thinking how big it looked. I just wanted to get it out of the way but the lesson seemed to drag on and even when the bell went a few of the boys loitered in the classroom until one of them finally plucked up the courage to ask if he could stay and watch. The teacher laughed and said that only people who were having “the slipper” could stay behind and watch but that he was willing to slipper the bottoms of any boys who were curious. At that point,the boys left and the teacher closed the door.
He picked up “the slipper” from the desk and asked me to follow him to the back of the room where he asked me if I had ever had “the slipper” before. When I said that I hadn’t, he explained that what I needed to do was turn around and face in the opposite direction then bend right over and touch my toes. My legs felt like jelly as I bent over and I had to be told to bend lower before the teacher was happy with the position of my bottom. He then used “the slipper” to flick the back of my blazer out of the way and then made me wait for about three seconds before he slippered me. As he whacked me, I felt my willy move in my underpants and a small drop of urine came out with the force of the whack. I said, “Ow!”, more from the shock of it than the pain then reared up slightly as a burning pain began to kick in. The teacher gently guided me back into the position and I clenched my bottom and waited for the second whack which had the same effect as the first. The teacher then asked me if I could take one more or if two was enough and I told him that I had had enough.
When I accidentally knocked a glass beaker off the workbench in a physics lesson, the teacher asked the lab technician to bring the dustpan and brush and made me sweep up the broken glass. He then asked the lab technician to bring him ‘the slipper’.
There was a blackboard on wheels at the back of the lab and the teacher told me that he wanted me to come behind the blackboard with him because he wanted to slipper me. I tried to argue that it was an accident but the teacher said that I shouldn’t have put my bag onthe workbench and that I needed to have a quick slippering. I still tried to protest that I hadn’t meant to break the beaker but then a boy in the class told me to stop wasting time and go and get slippered. Sensing the hostility of my classmates who wanted to hear me getting slippered, I went with the teacher behind the blackboard and reluctantly bent over.
The teacher then whacked “the slipper” into my bottom knocking me forward with the force of the blow and causing me to emit a loud ‘Ow!’ to the amusement of my classmates. I then stood up but the teacher told me to bend down again because he wanted to give me another one. This time I jumped up just as “the slipper” was landing so that I didn’t catch the full force but the teacher told me that we needed to do that one again and so I clenched my buttocks and concentrated on keeping my bottom still while he slippered it properly bringing tears to my eyes.
