On another occasion, I’d been given a detention with another boy but I was in more trouble than him. After half an hour of sitting on the wooden stools in the Physics lab, he told the other boy, Woods, that he could go but went and got the Slipper out for me so that he could whack me before sending me home. Although the detention had been boring, it was nice to have a bit of excitement to look forward to at the end. For this slippering, I had to bend over the desk. The first whack was quite a stinger and because I didn’t want another straight on top of it, I made a bit of a performance of shouting out ‘Ow!’ afterwards and standing up to space things out. The teacher waited patiently for me to bend down again and then delivered his second.
