In the school I attended as a boy, CP was rare and on the few occasions it was used, word of the incidents would spread around the school like wildfire. It would be like: “Did you hear about what happened to —– during maths?” or “—— has been sent to the headmaster for swearing again. I think he might get the cane this time.” And these rare “beatings” were never particularly severe – usually nothing more than one stroke of the cane to a boy’s hand. So a girl being slippered in a largely liberal school would probably take it far less well than one in a school where such punishments were commonplace.
