“It is our experience that it is extremely rare for a teacher to be at the centre of such accusations and Mr Shotton’s conviction should not be allowed to reflect on the profession as a whole. Schools generally remain a safe environment for children.
“The impact of a case such as this is profound not only for those who have been abused but for all that are touched by the betrayal of trust.
“Mr Shotton’s conviction is merely the end of a chapter in a story that will continue long after today and our thoughts go out to all who have been affected by this case.”
In a statement, West Sussex County Council said it “deeply regrets” the case.
