Instead of the usual dismissal after caning me. He had become Headmaster of the school the year I joined and apart from my frequent visits to his office I knew him quite well through my father’s involvement in the PTA and through his introduction of week long outdoor pursuit trips to the Lake District and Wales and the like during Easter holidays which I always attended.
