I was caned, for the only time in my life, very severely, in 1964. Pain was beyond description at time of delivery, but dulled to a manageable level in about two hours; all discomfort was gone in two or three days. The deep, purple welts lasted visibly for a couple of months – fading each day, with the residual light bruising finally invisible about five or six months later. Close examination – and I do mean close examination, with a magnifying glass – reveals very very faint lines of white scar tissue even today.
