The plaintiff was the medical superintendent of the Camberwell Infirmary, and various criticisms had been made on his conduct in respect of what had been called “the flogging of sick children.” All the actions were brought in respect of allegations of that nature. The first was concerned with statements made in the election addresses of a lady and her son who were candidates for the Camberwell Board of Guardians; the second was brought against the Weekly Budget (Limited) on account of statements of a similar character published in the Weekly Budget, and the third was against Mr. Conolly and the Dulwich, Peckham, and Camberwell Post.
