Asked what the boys condition was at the end, Mr. Byrd said it was hard to assess because he was putting on a “bit of an act”. Afterwards the boy was out of breath and a little nervous. Mr. Byrd said he knew nothing about the word “Nazi” being written on the boy.

Mr. Byrd gave his account of an alleged incident in which one boy had said he was given six of the best.

The accused agreed that he had a swagger stick about 18 inches long, bound with insulating tape at one end. He gave him a stroke on each hand and then the boy swore. He told him that because of this he would have the rest of the strokes on his backside. He ordered him to drop his trousers because he had a thick pair on.
