Pool incident: head’s wife replies

Mrs. Audrey Byrd, wife of the headmaster of Cholderton College, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, said in evidence at the trial of her husband at Hampshire Assizes at Winchester yesterday that she was at a swimming pool when a boy was thrown into the water.

Asked why she had taken the junior school to see the incident, she said one or two of the juniors were beginning to follow the example of the boy involved.

William Michael Byrd, aged 38, is accused of offences against seven of his former pupils. He has pleaded Not Guilty to 12 offences, five of which allege he occasioned bodily harm, and seven alleging cruelty.
