Punishments out of the ordinary tend to carry more significance than the ordinary. For example, if punishment is normally administered in private doing it in public would add significantly to its perceived severity. Conversely, if “minor” punishments are administered on the spot in front of the class delaying them and administering them in private might equally increase their seriousness. All this is quite aside from the actual force used in the punishment.
