It’s a bit like playing squash. You run to where the ball will be, but then stop before hitting it. The running doesn’t give you any extra power. If your opponent is kind enough to hit the ball to where you are standing, you don’t have to run at all and your shot will be more accurate.

 

Bowlers in cricket include a run up when delivering the ball. Fast bowlers run fast as an integral part of their delivery, presumably because it adds speed. Softball pitchers step forward for the same purpose. It seems to me that it should be possible, although awkward, to do the same with a cane. Possibly, a stroke delivered on the way down after a jump might be “useful”, at the cost of precision but with a theatrical bonus. If the caner ruptures cartilage and tendons in the process and doubles up in agony ….
