Factors which might influence this during the period when CP was legal for use in the school concerned could include:
The type of school, State, Church or Private.
- State Schools often had corporal punishment regulations imposed by the relevant Local Education Authority (LEA).
- Church Schools often had corporal punishment regulations partly derived from the relevant LEA and partly from Diocesan Committees.
- Private Schools were by and large pretty much a law unto themselves with regard to corporal punishment.
- The age of the pupil. It was not uncommon for the way the cane was administered to vary with the age of the pupil in schools which covered a wide age range.
- The sex of the pupil. For instance sometimes in mixed schools boys were caned on the buttocks and girls were caned on the hands.
