I take the point, but where do you draw the line? It seems to me, for example, that if the current report is correct ( and I have no reason to doubt it ) the late Jimmy Saville was eligible for a long prison term in the 60s and 70s – but never got one. The late head of Eton and Fettes, Chenevix- Trench probably deserved a similar fate, and we could go on with the list. In the Saville case the police miserably bungled it as late as 2008/9. why? Because in this country there is an unhealthy forelock-tugging deference to authority ( some of which doubtlessly instilled by familiarity with the cane ! ), and accepting – always – the words of ‘important people ‘ or ‘celebrities’.
