Some years ago, one of my employees made a serious complaint about the husband of another employee. He was employed at the same place of work but was not under my control. The two women did not get on at all well and had been feuding.
The complainer was an excellent worker and had been entirely reliable previously. Her accusations were extraordinary and hard to believe. It was very hard to know what to do. One or more lives were almost certain to be destroyed, and all involved would be damaged. I very much wished the issue would just go away. It did not, of course, and caused trouble long after.
I can easily understand the urge to sweep things under the carpet.
