We did not protest when the headmaster said he was going to beat us. We did not (how I wish we had) refuse to go out of his study and come in again one by one and bend over and lift our blazers and be still. We did not turn on him together and rip his pompous gown from his back and snap his whippy canes in our hands. How I wish we had. We took our beatings and then we met together in the cloakroom to compose ourselves and some of us cried a few tears which just made it all worse. None of our parents came to punch the headmaster’s nose. None wrote to the education authority to demand that he be disciplined. He got away with it.
