In the late 80`s just a couple of years after the ban on CP in state schools, I knew a boy (well actually I knew his mother, not the boy himself) that was being smacked by his Headmaster on a fairly regular basis.
I remember commenting to the mother that the Headmaster was not allowed to do that anymore. She told me she was more than happy for him to continue to smack her son she felt he was getting out of control and a good hiding was the only thing he listened to. Quite how much he was listening is debatable considering the Headmaster had to keep repeating himself! but still, that is a different story.
