I remember when in the fourth year at secondary school (The Skinners’ School, Tun Wells, Kent, in the 1950s) one boy wanted to see what would happen if he had a Bible in his trousers when he was called to the front of the class to be slippered or caned. One of the few teachers at our school who used corporal punishment always carried a cane or slipper with him. Sorry people this was an all-boys school! Anyway, most of the class knew he was going to try and get a whacking with a Bible in his pants. He did get that far, and he did do a few things, like calling out, but for some reason, the teacher never called him out for punishment!
