The thing that most intrigues me though are rules 26 and 27:
26. For Going to Girls Play Places 3 strokes.
27. For Going to Boys Play Places 4 strokes.
One must assume that boys and girls were allowed to go to their respective play places (the sexes were not allowed to play together, rule 1, 4 strokes) so rules 26 and 27 presumably refer to children going to the wrong play area for their sex. If so we have here a reversal of the ‘Sugar and Spice’ unfairness oft quoted by our distinguished contributor Jenny, in that it would appear that girls were punished more severely (4 strokes) for going to the wrong play area than boys (3 strokes)
