The second course is to contact the PRO (public record office) and if it has been listed as being “open” to the public will let you view it. As a rule, you have to request such books about two days in advance. Failing this write to the Senior Education Officer at the office that your school was under. If you keep pestering, and they know where the book is kept, they will often allow it to be viewed but you have to sign a legal undertaking that it will not be reproduced or people’s names used in any way….this includes serious research.

By far the most interesting readings are the school Log Books as these often contain more information as to the the background and reason for a caning. This is often backed up by any note-worthy reaction to the caning from the pupil and any contact WITH THE SCHOOL MADE BY THE PARENT.
