If you didn’t hold your hand out the first time she asked, she’d grab your wrist and give you two instead of one. It wasn’t a big deal and didn’t hurt that much – but enough to make it worth avoiding. There was a certain amount of kudos to be gained from being in her class, among the other kids, even though she was only a replacement teacher who left when the real one came back from having a baby.
