I have a friend whom I’ve known for a large part of my life. She was a Principal in Texas , and often says you had to err on the side of caution. You had a few minutes, plus the school record to help you make up your mind about a paddling . Any doubt , or a terribly anxious student , use another approach . ( this was in the 70’s/80’s when paddling was ‘de rigeur’. There is a serious problem with this approach
