Our school had standards. We expected a proper uniform standard of dress, manners, and hard work. Failure to meet these standards led to punishment. Most punishment was in the form of lines, detention, and the like, and a few staff members used the gym slipper ( completely unofficially, but we turned a blind eye ). We did retain the cane for really serious breaches of discipline. I was one of four mistresses allowed to cane. Now we never caned for minor matters. Indeed one could say that canings were a rare event,but when they were given they were seen as a very serious punishment. We were allowed to give up to six cuts of the cane on either hands or bottom.
