As regards self punishments, I recall one episode at my junior school. A teacher ordered two boys out, produced his cane, and then, instead of caning them himself told one of the boys to bend over, and handed the cane to the other boy and asked him to cane this other boy. This boy did so very reluctantly and gave him two very feeble strokes. And that was it. The other boy didn’t have to respond and they were sent back to their desks.
This only happened once, and the teacher went back to administering proper canings in future.
