I heard the swish of the cane withdraw from my bottom and then a louder swish and a sharp crack as it bit deeply into the cotton underpants affording scant protection to my poor buttocks underneath. White-hot pain seared through both cheeks and I would have screamed out in agony if I had not been biting into the gag. This was surely the most painful cut of a cane I had experienced in my life. The Headmaster had meant what he said when he promised to thrash me as hard as he could.
