At school I would always have chosen detention had I been given the option; I was scared of the cane and hated the indignity of the procedure. Unfortunately, my feelings about it didn’t always stop me from having moments of irresponsibility!
It was only after I left school that I came to terms with the cane and realized that being scared was part of its deterrent effect.
It was interesting to talk to others about visits to the headmaster’s study and to discover the reasons why it was a worse experience for some than for others. It has remained an interest to this day.
