I think that the Headmaster caned me and my friends in front of each other was because we were all caught for the same offense, whereas I received my previous canings for an individual offense and subsequently I had to line up with the other boys and we were called in individually. While the sting of the cane as it struck my buttocks was memorable I do not think that it would have been as memorable if there wasn’t a big production before the cane struck my buttocks. On average the cane was administered two to three times a week and my headmaster had been at the school for fifteen years before I arrived and he would have been there for 21 years by the time I left; that is around 2,300 canings during a career.
