A boy at my school who claimed to be a veteran of corporal punishment said several times that the head of year had given him the “wet slipper”. Even if he was making it up, he must have heard some schoolboy lore that said that the wet slipper was harsher than the dry slipper. He also claimed that the wet slipper didn’t mark as much as the dry one, so it was worth the increased pain because there was less chance of your parents finding out.
