Back in the 1960s it was simply taken for granted. Anybody who thought it was morally wrong to hit schoolboys’ bottoms repeatedly with a big gym shoe hard enough to make them cry would have been regarded as a slightly cranky idealist. Even people who disliked the idea in principle regarded it as a necessary evil. More debatable is the practice of using the slipper as a motivational tool to encourage boys (and maybe girls) to study. All I can say is that at the time I don’t think any of us thought there was anything fundamentally wrong about the practice.
