Sometimes the test papers were handed back before the slippering was done. Boys would then skim through their exam papers in the hope of finding that the teacher had made a mistake, for example by marking a correct answer as wrong or by adding up the marks incorrectly. Boys sometimes managed to reduce the number of whacks that way. On the whole, the teachers were quite reasonable in that respect. They didn’t seem to mind admitting to their mistakes.
