Of all the reasons that had occurred to him for being called into the Principal’s office, this was the last he would have ever considered.

The Principal continued,

“You are excused from school for the time being.

Your neighbor tells me that you have an aunt in another state.

Is that true?”

Theodore said ‘yes’ in a hollow voice.

“Is she well off financially?

Do you think she’ll be able to take you in?”

Theodore looked aghast at the idea of living with his aunt.

He was at a loss at what to say.

The Principal saw his consternation and said,

“That’s all right, son.

I’m sure everything will work itself out for you.

You can leave your books in my office.
