On Thursday morning of the ensuing week, Anita bent over her husband’s sleeping form and surreptitiously palpated his skull before she woke him. She could feel that the sutures between the bones in his skull had begun to open and separate. His anterior fontanelle had opened completely and when she palpated his posterior fontanelle, she could feel it had begun to separate as well. From the viewpoint of child development, his anterior fontanelle shouldn’t have begun opening until he had regressed beyond the physical age of three years. His posterior fontanelle should have remained closed until he had regressed to the physical development of a twelve month old infant.
