[B][U]Chapter 32: Let Me Through
Jacob, Kif, Gavin and I were all driving home. While I was at the tournament, I’d decided to pick up something for Rebecca. I felt bad about how I had reacted, regardless of whether I was in the wrong, or the right.
“Gavin, how long till we get to Rebecca’s house?” I asked.
“We’re pulling up now lad.” He responded. Sure enough, I turned and saw Rebecca’s house to our right. “You boys stay in the car. I’ll go give her what you got her, and talk to Justin for a bit. Just stay here and stay warm.” He replied. It was starting to snow now, and the weather was unbearably cold. We nodded and waited as Gavin approached the house. All of a sudden though, as he peered into the window, he ducked. He crouched and walked over to the door, opening it slowly and peeking in. I couldn’t hear anything he was saying, but I could make out his lips moving. He then opened up the door, and aimed a pistol inside. I hadn’t even known he had his pistol on him! The three of us ducked in the cruiser.
“Tristian, what the hell is going on?!” Jacob asked. Kif was tearing up and starting to cry.
“I don’t have a freaking clue. Let me peek.” I responded cautiously. I looked through the window, and saw something I would have never believed. First, I heard a loud ‘pop’ sound. And then I saw Gavin fall to the ground. He was struggling in pain… because Justin had just shot him.
Kif, Jacob and I were running. We were running as fast as we could. Justin hadn’t seen us yet, so we felt that the only thing we could do was run.
“Oh shit man, Gavin’s shot!” I repeated over and over again.
“Tristian; just move it! We’ll get back to the house and call the cops!” Jacob stated. Even he was crying though. We had nothing left to do and only one place left to run; home. But as we came upon our street… fate seemed to stop our plans once again. As I looked on at the picture before me, the water in my eyes began to burst. My house was on fire. But I didn’t stop running. No, I ran faster through the freezing cold. I felt it whip my face and hands over and over again, continuing to try and slow me down. But I stood resilient!
I ran through the crowd, shoving people out of my way as Jacob and Kif ran behind me.
“LET ME THROUGH!” I bellowed. “LET ME THROUGH, THIS IS MY HOUSE!” I cried. I ran through the yellow police tape until an officer stopped me.
“Get out of here kid!” He yelled.
“NO YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND!” I explained teary eyed. “THAT’S MY HOUSE! PLEASE! YOU HAVE TO HELP THE CHIEF!” I screamed. The officer looked confused.
“Chief O’doyle?” He asked. He began to let myself, Jacob and Kif through. I looked at him.
“Yes! The chief’s hurt, he got shot!” I cried. But then it hit me like a ton of bricks.
“WHERE’S MY MOM?!” I screamed. “MY MOTHER!”
“Your mother?” He asked. “Young man…” He muttered. “We only found a single burnt corpse in the house… we were too late. The body isn’t identifiable.” He said. The tears began to flow harder.
“That’s it…” I cried. “I’ve lost it all. I’ve lost everything.” I teared. More officers began to circle around us.
“We need half of you to go a few streets down and go investigate a series of gunshots right now!” An officer said.
“Gavin! Gavin’s there!” Kif yelled. “Chief O’doyle got shot! You have to go help him!” Kif begged. The officers looked at each-other, fear gripping their faces and hearts.
“Half of you go right now! I’ll call in the SWAT team but you need to go help the chief!” An officer said.
“YES SIR LIEUTENANT SIR!” They replied, running to their cruisers and shooing as many people away as they could. As they drove off into the distance, my heart stopped. Through my teary eyes, I saw a car coming down the street. The car of a mad man.
“JACOB! KIF; RUN!” I screamed. We began to dart way, as we could just barely look back at the car barreling towards the cruisers. The officers there tried to catch up to us, but stopped as soon as they heard a shot fired. It was Justin.
He hopped out of the car and the people around began to flee. He ducked behind his car and aimed at the officers.
“Move your fucking cars!” He screamed. They all took out their pistols.
“Put the gun down or we’ll shoot!” One of the officers said. But Justin wasn’t about to let that happen. He fired several shots, and off in the distance, we heard even more shots.
But that didn’t matter now. We kept running. We had no choice BUT to run at this point! We needed to get out of here.
“Jacob, I know where to go! Just follow me!” I yelled. He nodded, and Kif got closer to us. We were all in tears of shock, running for hours and hours. I had no idea I was even able to run that long. We ran until we came to the highway, but still ran steadily down the side until we came across a familiar place. A place familiar to just myself and Jacob.
The Dover Facility.
