I remember one boy who was expelled when in a chemistry lesson he heated a pair of tongs to red heat, crept up behind a boy who was sitting on a stool with a hole in the centre and proceeded to pinch his backside with the red hot tongs. He was given 6 strokes of the cane and immediately expelled.

I remember a lad touching another on the back of his neck with a slightly warm piece of metal during a metalwork lesson. A silly prank but it wasn’t excessively hot but enough to raise a squeal and leave a slight red mark. The teacher, an older more senior one, immediately stopped us working and put some antiseptic cream and a plaster on the boy’s neck. Then, to the surprise of all there, he produced a proper school cane. The offender was then put over the end of a work bench and given a real three of the best. We were only in the second form, 12/13 year olds. We knew that the cane was used by the headmaster sometimes always in private but never in a lesson The boy took his caning without flinching, his bottom was well marked by it. We saw the damage later that day when changing for PE. He’d not been caned in school before but said he was used to being walloped at home,

Nor me, a real school six of the best would have been a final warning punishment with the threat of expulsion if in serious trouble again. That said a boy who’d just been expelled might find himself bending at home when his parents were told!
