In 1939 an article that would appear in the below links wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. The end of the innocence began here with kinky model Betty Page. The film on the Notorious Betty Page showed when that Senator Estes Kefauver TN attacked the effects of pornography on youth with her promoter Irving Klaw being questioned on Capitol Hill. Her promoter was upset that Kiss Me Kate with its famous spanking scene on stage in 1951 didn’t receive any censure or censor. Nothing pornographic here. I did find the pout with the wife rubbing her bottom ranking up there with a Norman Rockwell classic. It may become a best selling poster.

As I look back I wonder in 1939 whether the same mentality justifying nonconsensual corporal punishment for self gratification was operative in the home within moderation was found in the school. There is a universal moral compass IMHO called a conscience and I find many people must have found corporal punishment OTT and looked the other way back then. How many bare bottom spankings were given devoid of lustful motives? I would assume most but less likely than clothed. Pain and humilation was part of the punishment and I’m sure given by many with the best interests of the student in mind but were people aware what a temptation it was for some? They stopped doing it around the end of the age of innocence. What year or so was that in the UK? We have fewer boarding school so much of this wouldn’t apply as it did in the home. What shifting standards of motives in fashion and CP!!!

I cannot imagine very many who like beer and whiskey switched to soda pop. The soda pop drinkers have largely switched from water. Many kids now drink alcopops or RTDs which may have boosted soda pop consumption.

What did become of poor black haired, blue eyed, 13 year old Rachel Evel, whose only crime was to hurl a blackboard eraser at her teacher, something I’m sure all of us have done when thwarted in any way at school. Or perhaps not, though plenty of blackboard erasers were certainly hurled in the opposite direction at my secondary school!

The school’s disciplinary code must have provided some means of dealing with girls throwing things at teachers short of having them arrested, held for several days and hauled before the Justices! But then I suppose New York had abandoned school CP by 1910 ………. </div>

The arrangement was made by Superintendent Walsh of the Children’s Society. Dr. Schlapp of the society testified the girls is normal in intelligence.

Thank you for the update. It is good to know that young Rachel Evel apparently escaped the sad fate of being incarcerated in the State Training School until her 21st birthday for the relatively trivial offence of throwing a blackboard eraser at her teacher, which anyway missed its target.

This case is most interesting, because it illustrates that the ridiculous phenomenon of school teachers, and indeed parents, abrogating their responsibility to discipline children in their care and attempting to place the onus for this on the Judicial System is by no means new. The domineering Principle of New York City Public School 168 Miss Ceclila Francis, the ineffectual teacher Miss Therese Rosenthal and the rather silly mother Mrs Anna Evel were attempting to use this dubious mechanism in December 1910.

In direct line of succession from those pathetic excuses for adults are School Staff in Montgomery County, Texas, who engineered this ludicrous exhibition of high school girls being handcuffed and shackled and taken into custody from school for …… Well, what for? Murdering several of the school staff? Bringing automatic weapons to school? Attempting to torch the school premises? Errm no, actually it was apparently for skipping school! What a ridiculous effort! What on earth did all those deputies and constables and motor vehicles cost? To say nothing of the fact that a full blown Judge was apparently also present.

Just as in the case of young Rachel Evel, any half-competent school staff would have dealt with the matter perfectly well without even a whiff of the Legal System. New York City seems to have abandoned school CP in 1870, so Rachel couldn’t have been given the spanking she richly deserved, but surely detention or writing lines or a long essay on why pupils must not throw blackboard erasers at teachers would have sufficed. I’ve no idea if Montgomery County, Texas has school CP. If it does why weren’t a few swats quickly dispensed, or failing that a few detentions or periods in ISS. Can it ever be right to give children criminal records, or even enforced exposure to the Judicial System, for trivial offences at school? I think not!</div>

You astound me! Fancy taking this comedy video as real. The give away is that the <s>police</s> actors have not drawn their weapons let alone their battens, Tazers or pepper spray. Note also the lack of alarm of the supposedly wayward girls.

The problem seems to be removal of discretion, and its ally common sense, from so much of life these days. Rules is rules and rigidly prescriptive rules prevail.

You not only astound me, but anyone with an ounce of common sense, if you think this is a staged comedy video with actors. I do agree that it is a comedy video, a comedy of errors. Do you think that the police need their weapons of guns battens tazers and pepper spray when dealing with school girls ? There is lack of alarm from the, as you say “supposedly” wayward girls because they are law abiding and do as the police tell them, and are not likely to start a fight with the police. They were not alarmed because, like everyone else, even though they were actually involved in the action, they also thought it was beyond normal comprehension to the point of ridiculousness.

Anyone who has studied the Rodney King arrest video will realise that the girls are resisting arrest. They may not look “happy” but they certainly look wicked with more than a hint of malice in their eyes. The police officers should have been given them each a squirt of pepper spray and a zap with the Taser before attempting to arrest them.

AMERICA ! The worlds policeman and land of the free !

School girls in handcuffs, leg irons and waist restraints ? ? ? ? Does this happen in Syria ?

Just what sort of people do they employ as principals, and others so called in charge of schools. As this is a polite board, I shall not express my opinion on the school management (or non management). It is clear they have not earned the respect of pupils and cannot enforce discipline. And this is not a reference to corporal punishment. In the work place, no one gets paddled or caned, but there is still discipline.

As it had got to this ridiculous length, why couldn’t the police just have told the girls, or “invited” them to get in the van.

America has recently been on about the treatment of people in Syria, ok, not quite as bad as that, but how long will it be before they lock all the kids in school and shell it with sarin gas. A different take on “That’ll teach em”

President Obama must welcome the widespread news of action like this, like hearing Christmas has been cancelled.

Not to say a draconian even like this has only happen once in America but I strongly believe it is an aberration and hopefully does not become trens. It would more likely not to be tolerated in the overwhelming number of states where paddling does not occur. It is false assumption that because that school does not paddle, that because of the lack of CP as an option, this option had to be chosen. There is a culture of tolerance toward those in authority whether teachers or law enforcement officer that they are doing exactly what their parents or school boards would want thus double jeopardy (school and home) more so in the South than elsewhere. I can’t see this happening in New England and other regions of the USA. The fact that it was so rare it might have become considered newsworthy or so I would hope. That’s my take but I might be wrong. In any case it is not the American Way.

The jailing of students of truancy (at least on the public record) does seem to be a Montgomery TX specialty, and then restricted to 17 or older. It still seems reprehensible, but then it is Texas….

The incident referred to in the pictures above occurred in May 2011 (see my earlier post). There haven’t been any reported since the Diane Tran case which produced this impassioned defence of the judges in the quaintly named Montgomery County Police reporter.

More common is the threatened and actual jailing of parents, both in the US and elsewhere.

When many of the county officials and teachers were in high school in 1986 in Montgomery County OH there were 44,000 paddled in that state. Among officials many were victims or beneficiaries depending on your POV. I had mentioned the State of Washington as an example of a state where paddling faded away in a very recent post as well as before.

There was a case earlier, reported on this board I think, of the police being called to deal with a tantrum of a small child at school. The teachers were unwilling to use force. Unfortunately, the handcuffs were too big and fell off the small wrists. Doubtless, all the more progressive departments have upgraded their restraints since.

There is nothing in between arrest and non arrest. You can not be compelled to do anything if you are not arrested. Invitations to cooperate can be hard to distinguish from improper duress when there is a power imbalance. Further, those under arrest have rights not afforded to those who are merely cooperating.

Those who are arrested must all be treated the same – in some jurisdictions in the USA. The reasoning is that the arresting officers can not reliably judge how those arrested will behave. For the safety of all, and because of the need to treat everyone equally, all must be restrained.

It can be very confusing if those under arrest are not put in chains. Once, after a successful mountain rescue, we, the rescuers, had to wait at a small local police station for transport to come and take us home. We were shown into the canteen and invited to serve ourselves. Several other civilians were in the room to whom we chatted. It was only later that we discovered that they were CRIMINALS waiting to be finger printed. Then there were times when search and rescue teams were transported in unlocked paddy wagons. Members of the public were alarmed when they saw us “escaping”.

Somehow, my tyrannical teachers of old do not seem so bad now. They never called the police to the school. Of course, them having our best interests at heart may have helped.

There is an outside chance that one of the girls from the video clip, the girl in white at the left hand end of the line in my first frame grab, might have escaped that fate. A photograph in the article you linked shows a court official adjusting her handcuffs, which this time are anodised a fashionable red! It is not clear if she is being freed to go home or being handcuffed for the trip to jail. However we may be sure of one thing it seems. Whatever else the girls may have learnt from their experience they sure as heck would be expert on restraint devices! Three different sets of handcuffs and counting ….. </div>

I can’t trace the incident you mention where the handcuffs slipped off an arrested child, though I seem to recall the report here. However, this article makes it clear that the arrest and use of restraints on small children is by no means unusual. It includes mention of the arrest of a 5 year old boy at a school in California for, wait for it, committing battery on a police officer!

I’ve known a few policemen here in the UK, and I can’t imagine that any of them would ever be able to face their colleagues again if they claimed a 5 year old was committing battery on them! And what’s more they don’t even have guns! Doubtless because police issue handcuffs were too big the belligerent battery committing 5 year old was restrained with zip ties after his arrest.

But I mustn’t be too complacent. Police are becoming a frequent presence in schools here. I hope to goodness it never comes to 5 year olds being arrested, but I’m sure it won’t be long before a few pre-teens and teens get hauled away from school in handcuffs, if indeed it hasn’t already happened.

I wonder if this emphasis on restraining arrested persons is a relatively new thing. In the late 1960s a relative who was very fond of the USA but very short of funds spent much time criss-crossing the continent on Greyhound buses. He recounts that in an overnight trip encompassing Alabama the local Sheriff arrived at an early morning stop with a very large and very mean looking black prisoner, whom he put on the bus instructing the driver that another law officer would be picking him up at the next stop.

The man, who was completely free of any restraints, sat quietly for a time, but then began to wander up and down the bus behaving in a very threatening manner. Eventually, much to the relief of my informant, a very small and very elderly black lady stood up, read the man the riot act, and told him to sit down and behave himself. Which he duly did until he was collected by another Sheriff at the next stop!</div>

He missed school because he was working, and going to jail for 72 hours would cause him to miss work, which could have resulted in his mother losing her house. The judge listened and asked the young man to take a seat to the side of the courtroom. He later quietly confirmed the story with school officials, and then took the young man in his office where he shared words of encouragement. He told the young man he was going to give him another chance and then gave him money from his own pocket and told him to take his mother to dinner.

As if there is no correlation with what goes on behind closed doors in a conference room or a bedroom? A husband who spanks his wife for poor conduct is that not that far a stretch from a young male teacher, coach or administrator paddling a senior in violation of the high school code of conduct? Three things . first the song is recorded on an open d tuning, common in delta blues.Not instantly recognisable as such because its played with capo. The lyrics ? Well Camille Paglia speculated that the song’s lyrics might have been partly inspired by William Blake’s poem “The Mental Traveller”: “She binds iron thorns around his head / And pierces both his hands and feet / And cuts his heart out of his side / To make it feel both cold & heat. the stones have indicated that they saw it as being about the release from acid,and finally Bill Wyman reckons he wasn’t credited with the main riff in the song .

Reality? I suspect its from a delta blues background , and the strap is used widely in both the MS delta and the LS delta region( and in the ‘woodshed’ the back is as ok as anywhere else ) . The use in the Whoopie goldberg film of the same name , and Aretha Franklin’s cover of it give some credence to the structure being delta blues.

Here’s a ’72 version from the band in Texas. Note despite the studio version being on gibson this uses the Fender telecaster and no capo. The few times I played it , I used an open E tuning . You should be able to use a Nashville tuning on ‘lites’ either.

I claim no expertise in this field, but clearly the learned judge was talking about American women born at least as far back as 1863 (40 years back from 1903) Life expectancies are a very complex subject, particularly extending that far back and after a quick look I have given up trying to factor in this and other things which should be considered in an accurate calculation.

Instead I’ll fall back onto a very rough and ready calculation based on the average life expectancy of a baby girl born in the UK. In 1901 this was 49 years. For a newborn baby girl born in early 2011 it was 82 years.

It seems reasonable, and only fair to ladies, to assume that the average spanking age for women will have similarly extended upwards to match life expectancy. If our 1901 baby girl could, if she was so inclined, expect to be spanked until she was 40, then her 2011 counterpart might reasonably expect to be spanked until she was at least 67. Again only if she was so inclined of course!

Even a lady born around the same time as me, 1942, life expectancy 65 years or so at birth, could if so inclined reasonably expect to be spanked until she was 53. And of course life expectancy increases (up to a point at least) with age attained, so those of my female contemporaries who so wish may well still be within their extended spanking age.

Very regrettably I am not able to report if this is the case. However hints dropped from time to time in this estimable Forum convince me that if the learned judge was pontificating on the subject today he would find himself in a great deal of trouble if he did not extend the upper limit of his spanking age for women somewhat beyond 40! As I look back I wonder in 1939 whether the same mentality justifying nonconsensual corporal punishment for self gratification was operative in the home within moderation was found in the school. There is a universal moral compass IMHO called a conscience and I find many people must have found corporal punishment OTT and looked the other way back then. How many bare bottom spankings were given devoid of lustful motives? I would assume most but less likely than clothed. Pain and humilation was part of the punishment and I’m sure given by many with the best interests of the student in mind but were people aware what a temptation it was for some? Sometimes a story gathers little attention such as the judgment of Magistrate Mackenzie Matheson in Vancouver that later becomes a part of a bigger story. It will be interesting to see if in fact paddling ends in my lifetime or in theirs. I’m more or less twice their age. The question really comes down to how firmly entrenched are these customs.

For the kids in the middle teens at schools would be the only place where someone their age would be hit. Younger teachers would less likely be the one asked to paddle with administrators usually well into their thirties. If and when the younger professional staff refuses to witness paddling it may end sooner.

The homogenization of the south happened in Florida where paddling are limited to a smaller portion of their geography. It would not be altogether presumptuous to assume that district by district prohibitions will mean that paddling will end with a whimper and not a bang with no pun intended.

On an unrelated matter we had a high school class reunion that are much more fun IMHO than college ones. I hope some readers here will be given our cultural gap and common interest better left unspoken.

The first video brought back memories. Along with my classmates we piled as many students in a Volkswagon Beetle. Too bad for the owner it bent the axle. The principal ran out to capture the moment with her Polaroid but her laughter quickly dissipated when the girl squeezed next to the gas pedal was the girl who would be voted the most likely to succeed as in becoming pregnant.

I have mentioned this on more than one occasion that what would be considered outrageous as a practiced in one country would be considered OK in another. Growing up we would say put your dukes up when one needed to defend oneself. We learned skills to deal with bullies that would serve us in good stead when we would have to deal with them throughout our lives. There was a nobility and civility to that custom like challenging your opponent to a duel. There was a custom where you would put your hands behind your back and take turns punching each other. We called that Mexican boxing for we saw it in a western movie. I believe that the “cachetadas and nalgada” as shown in these videos where the guy spanks the girl’s bottom and the girl slaps the boy in the face is somewhat similar or at least that was what came to my mind. Mexico hasn’t hit schoolchildren in years though the Latinos are getting paddled in greater numbers in Texas than whites albeit less than blacks.

Police are policing parents who spank their children in some areas. Police administering corporal in 1967? Had that law had been past it could have been applied to me. YIKES.

Now, ‘stop and spank’ FOR PEOPLE who believe that policemen would be given too much power if a “stop and frisk” law is enacted, there’s a new angle: a “stop and spank” law. Ewell, D- Chicago, policemen would be given the same legal relationship to boys under 17 and girls under 18 in public places as parents and guardians stand to them in the home. The stipulation is added that the juveniles would have to be breaking a law before policemen could assume parental authority. Spanking would certainly seem to be in order under the provisions of the bill. But questions are sure to arise. Where, for example, is the spanking to be applied? Somehow, it’s difficult to picture a policeman upending an unruly teen-ager to administer a spanking when a rap on the knuckles — or the head–with a nightstick would be easier and less time-consuming. If the legislature does enact this bill, it had better put in a protection clause for pint- sized policemen. It seems the juvenile crop is growing pretty muscular these days.

You really do come up with the most amazing things! Never a dull moment! Another_Lurker was much taken with the idea of parading around in funny clothes and acting out silly fantasies in a crowd large enough to ensure anonymity by virtue of everyone else pursuing similar aims.

Sadly however, despite carefully scrutinising all the pictures in your first link above he failed to spot a young lady teacher who even vaguely resembled any of the TWP ladies, and certainly there wasn’t a Kaye paddle or a Nashia paddle in sight. Further, he couldn’t see that police lady with the handcuffs and cane from the festive silly season three years ago anywhere either.

Greatly discouraged, he resolved to resign himself once more to his humdrum everyday existence, and was jolly glad he had done when he came to your stuff about the sexual symbolism of those Yaoi and Yuri paddles and whatnot!

Seriously, isn’t that cosplay rather than anime? I thought anime was those strange Japanese cartoons where the characters have a mouth and eyes, but no nose. I could be wrong though, it certainly isn’t my area of expertise!

And more on the subject of those Yaoi degrees. Following the elevation of the Bash Street Primary School to The University of the Leen Valley and thousands of similar miraculous transformations throughout the realm it is claimed that 25% of the UK population now have a degree. I find this incredible, but it is in Guardian so it must be true.

Sadly it is becoming evident that an insufficient proportion of the available jobs either need or are suited to many of the degree holders, which is leading to a certain amount of misery and frustration. Let us hope for the sake of young Mr Turner that the Yaoi industry is recruiting when he finally leaves the Groves of Academe for the real world – if he ever does.

My postings of late, however tertiary or peripheral have stemmed the decline in posting. Grant me that much.

I have always been amazed that it took so long for a situation like Trey Holladay or the Springtown TX paddling by an adult male authority figure of a post-pubescent girl to capture the attention of the mainstream media. I think it has something to do with parents not objecting and the practice limited to areas away from major media outlets. How else can it have stayed undetected and not make the radar screen? How far back does the age of innocence go?
