Carrie and Stephen came bustling in shortly thereafter and Megan threw a sheet over herself. Even after the Memorial Day debacle, she didn’t feel like showing off her diapers in front of them.
“Is Mom still on the phone?” she asked Carrie as she passed by her room.
“Yup. Hey, are you sick or something?”
Megan shrugged. “I hope not.”
“Me too. I have some tough exams coming up and I might need your help.”
“Sure thing…if I actually remember anything from high school.”
This was assurance enough for Carrie and she retired to her room to study. Megan tried to put the day’s catastrophe behind her, but it would not go quietly. The accident, the attack and little Brady were cruelly jumbled together in her mind. Things had been fine one minute; disastrous the next. She couldn’t deal with that kind of insecurity. It was too much for her to bear.
When Nancy returned from her phone calls, she still seemed a trifle upset.
“I spoke to your father,” she explained. “It upset him…probably even more than it did me.”
“I told you not to make a big deal out of it,” Megan countered. Was she the only one who wanted it to go away?
“He wanted to go to the police,” Nancy continued.
“The police?!” Megan replied, alarmed and confused.
Nancy sighed. “You forget that your father is not a woman. He doesn’t understand how embarrassing something like this can be. I told him that we should leave it up to you.”
Megan bit her lip in contemplation. She wanted to get revenge on Lena and Deanna, she really did. However, that would involve filling out a report, answering questions and reliving the incident again and again when all she wanted to do was put it to rest.
“I’ll have to think about it,” she said at last.
