In Joey’s case, his ex-wife had become his mommy in an absolute sense. He was completely dependent on her for everything. All of his needs were satisfied by her. There was no defense against his subconscious mind’s acceptance of her role, any more than there was a way for him to escape his fate. He had become her baby in fact. Whenever she entered the room, his face would light up and he would smile and jabber nonsensically in devotional greetings. His initial feelings of anger toward her had been slowly modified into infantile attachment and love for his mommy. As his world had imploded into the tiny universe of an infant and his attention span had eroded, he had lost interest in television and the external world. He had lost the ability to read along with his ability to speak on the first day when his brain reorganized itself into that of a nine-month-old, leaving a deficit in his life that only his mommy could fill.
