She got up and went over to Kevin and stood behind his chair and wrapped her arms around his shoulders and rested her chin on the top of his head. “I know this is tough for you, darling,” she said. “It’s tough for me too. But, I’ve got to go. Please…don’t make this harder.” She started to choke up on the last words.
“I’m sorry, mommy…I’m going to miss you.” Kevin nearly whispered and then began to sob.
“Oh, Kevin.” His mother whispered and then broke into tears also. She came around to the front of him and the two of them held each other in silence for a couple of minutes. I looked away to give them some privacy.
