Martin spoke up. “So, how does it feel to be older than your roommate now?”

Erin rolled her eyes. “She was born before me. She’s always been older than me.”

“Yeah,” Hailey agreed, “just because our ages are different now doesn’t mean the difference between us has gotten bigger. Don’t be silly, Dad.”

Martin smiled weakly. He was glad to see that Erin was finally getting a bit more comfortable speaking at home; he doubted that he would have gotten such a reply from her a few weeks ago. “I can’t put anything past you girls, can I?”

The girls looked at each other and grinned. Hailey hoped her father had actually known about the age difference; he was older than her, after all, and he shouldn’t be making such simple mistakes that she could see right through.
