Hailey had promised that Erin wouldn’t be in trouble, but now that Aunt Sue was actually here, Erin couldn’t be sure.
Erin’s glance at the bed and her subsequent expression were not lost on Sue, who now had a reasonable idea of what had happened. But there was no sense in accusing Erin without being certain, so she queried, “What happened to the sheets on the other bed?”
Erin knew from experience that lying would only lead to more punishment later. The best thing she could do right now was admit what she’d done, and hope that Hailey had been correct about not getting in trouble for her accident. Even as she realized this, though, she found herself unable to speak.
